A native of Nansemond County, he owned and operated Saunders Grocery, and prior to that he was a dealer and racer of horses for 35 years. He was the husband of Mrs. Mary Sue Wright Carter Saunders and a son of the late James R. and Mrs. Ida Brinkley Saunders. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Fred Basque of Lodi, Calif., Mrs. Florence S. Larmer of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Mrs. George Forbes of Franklin; a son, James Harrison Saunders of Suffolk; and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Harry Jennings of Portsmouth. A funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Saunders family cemetery near Cypress Chapel.
