Saunders Funeral services for Captain Stephen Lewis Saunders, prominent farmer of Nansemond County, who died suddenly at his home near Everetts Bridge, were held Saturday after noon at 2:30 o'clock at Oakland Christian Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. I.W. Johnson, assisted by the Rev. Dr. J.G. Truitt, of the Suffolk Christian Church. The choir sang "Abide With Me," and "Sometime We'll Understand." The casket was covered with a pall of lillies and white chrysanthemums. Active pallbearers were J.D. Harrell, C.H. Pitt, W.C. Moore, John R. Dixon, John Brown Bush, W.K. Wagner, J.C. Haskets R.C. [sic] conducted with Masonic rites, with Chuckatuck Lodge No. 77 A.F. & A.M., in charge. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Capt. Birthdate &c. from D.Cert. 24448 (Chuckatuck #20), which gives son of Stephen [T.] & Bettie Louise (MALLORY) SAUNDERS. His parents are buried in Weston Cemetery, Poquoson.
