Sumner Suffolk, June 10. - (Saturday) - Dempsey L. Sumner, 75, died this morning at 12:05 o'clock at a local hospital after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella [sic; Elila] Cross Sumner; a daughter, Miss Helen Sumner, and a number of nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the funeral home of I.O. Hill and Co., where funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. W.H. Corbitt, the Rev. H.J. Goodwin and the Rev. R.E. Brittle. Burial will be in Bethlehem Church Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** DEMPSEY SUMNER IS BURIED SUNDAY Service Conducted By Rev. Corbitt, Interment at Bethlehem Funeral services for Dempsey Sumner, prominent resident of the county, who died at his home on the Holland highway, were conducted Sunday afternoon at the funeral home of I.O. Hill and Company by the Rev. W.H. Corbitt, of Holland Baptist Church, the Rev. H.J. Goodwin, D.D., pastor of the First Baptist Church, of Suffolk, and the Rev. R.E. Brittle, pastor of Bethlehem Christian Church. A pall of Easter lilies, gypsophila and fern covered the casket and there were many floral tributes. William J. Work, assistant pastor of the First Baptist Church, sang the solos "Sunrise" and "Beautiful Home of the Soul," and the choir of the First Baptist Church sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." Mrs. W.J. Work was accompanist. Active pallbearers were Rawles Woodward, John Henry Powell, Paul Everett, L.H. Rawles, Dr. W.H. Chapman, Dr. Edward C. Joyner, I.B. Crutchlow and Otis Railey. Members of the Men's Bible Class and the board of deacons of Bethlehem Christian Church, friends and neighbors were honorary pallbearers. Burial was in Bethlehem Church Cemetery. His widow Martha C. (EVERETT) SUMNER was struck from the 1890 [Federal] Veterans' Schedule for Holy Neck Dist. His father-in-law, John Obid "Oby" CROSS (1846 - 1923) was also a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. A, 13th VA Cavalry.
