TURNER Suffolk, July 14 - Mrs. Annie L. Turner, 58*, widow of E. L. Turner, died at her home, 458 ˝ West Washington street, at 8:15 this morning, after an illness of several months. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. H. C. Nelms, of Nansemond County; Mrs. Bertie Atkinson, of Detroit; Mrs. L. E. Jones, of Suffolk, and Mrs. D. R. Dixon of San Diego, Calif.; four sons, Rosser and Howell Turner, of Suffolk, and Joel and Lester* Turner, of Detroit; her mother, Mrs. R. B. Howell, of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. May Nelms, of Norfolk; Mrs. W. C. Aumann, of Washington, and Mrs. J. P. Duke, of Nansemond County; three brothers, R. L., H. H., and J. C. Howell, all of Norfolk, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the residence by Dr. H. J. Goodwin, pastor of the First Baptist Church, of which she was a life long member, and the Rev. R. E. Brittle. The "Pilot" original gave her age as 57, and her son Lester as Lesser. Annie was known by her family and friends as Tissie. There is some question about her middle name. We saw where the L in her middle name was Lee. However, a written recording in her mother’s bible on her death has her as Annie Eliza Howell. Mrs. H. C. Nelms is her daughter Elsie L. Turner who married Hurley C. Nelms. Mrs. L. E. Jones is her daughter Annie May Turner who married Larry Jones. Mrs. D. R. Dixon was her daughter "Dicey Turner" who married a Dixon. Her mother Mrs. R. B. Howell was Virginia Gillette Bradshaw who married Roscius Bolden Howell. Mrs. May Nelms is her sister Jennie Mae/May Howell who married Horace David Nelms. Mrs. W. C. Aumann is her sister Lilly Pearl Howell who married William Conrad Aumann. Mrs. J. P. Duke is her sister Martha Deborah Howell who married James Phillip Duke. R. L. Howell is her brother Roscius Linwood "Buck" Howell. H. H. Howell is her brother Harvey Hudson Howell. J. C. Howell is her brother Joel Cleveland Howell. Annie, age 17, 1m. Emanuel TURNER (1861 - 1919) 9 Feb 1893. The Nansemond Co. M.Reg. '93 #20 gives them both as b. in Isle of Wight Co. Her mother's Bible lists Annie as b. 7 Mar 1876. Under Deaths, it states she was b. in Isle W. Co. & m. Feb 1892. The family appears in the 1880 Census in Maney's Neck Dist., Hertford Co., NC; it gives Annie A., age 4, b. VA. The 1910 Census in VA lists a daughter named Christina, age 1˝. It is not known (Feb 2014) when she died. The Suffolk M.Reg. '22 p. 3 #11 gives age 45, b. Southampton Co. However, they apparently divorced or got an annulment. Annie TURNER appears in the 1930 Census - 207 York St., Suffolk - as widowed. Her father's Suffolk obit gives Mrs. Annie L. TURNER, while his Norfolk obit gives Mrs. Annie CONES. CONES 3m. "Effie" Ethel Lee (WHEELHOUSE HARVELL) BENNETT (1895 - 1947) June 25, 1938 in DC. She 4m. a CARTER, and is buried in Maury Cemetery, Richmond. CONES is buried with his first wife in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery.
