Howell Turner, 46, retired Navy chief warrant officer, a Nansemond County native, died Tuesday at Vermont, N. H., where he was vacationing. He lived at Waltham, Mass. He served in the Navy 22 years and twice survived ships sunk in combat. He fought in the European and Pacific theaters of World War II and in the Korean Conflict. His parents were E. L. and Annie Howell of Nansemond County. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Crowley; four sisters, Mrs. Hurley Nelms, and Mrs. Larry Jones of Suffolk, Mrs Bertie Atkinson of Detroit and Mrs. D. R. Dickson of San Diego, Calif.; and two brothers, Joel E. Turner of Detroit and Lester B. Turner of San Diego. The body will arrive here Saturday at 7:05 a.m. via Norfolk & Western Railway. A funeral service will be conducted in I. O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. R. E. Brittle with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Larry Jones is his sister Annie Maye Turner Jones. She remarried, to Dennis Ray Dixon. Mrs. D. R. Dickson is "Dicey" Turner- not sure if that is a nickname or not.
