TURNER, WAS KNOWN AS VA.’S OLDEST WATCHMAKER SUFFOLK - Perry Everett Turner, 81, of the 900 block of E. Riverview Drive, who was vice-president of Brewer’s Jewelry Co., and was honored as the oldest watchmaker in the state, died Nov. 10, 1987, in his home. A native of Suffolk, Mr. Turner started his career in 1920 as an engraver at the Philadelphia Engraving School. The next year, he joined Brewer Jewelry Co., a concern that was owned by his brother Floyd Turner, and became vice president and co-owner of the jewelry company. Mr. Turner was also the past caretaker of the clock in the four story tower of Old City Hall in Suffolk. He repaired the clock and sometimes made parts for it by hand. His family said he never considered retiring and wanted to stay active. "Working was the one thing that kept him going" said his daughter, Carol T. Daniels of Jacksonville, Fla. He was the widower of Mary Virginia Turner. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and an honorary life member of Suffolk Elks Lodge 685. He was a member of the Horological Association of Virginia, a group that honored him as the oldest watchmaker in the state. He was formerly active in the church Boy Scout program. Other survivors include a son, Perry E. Turner, Jr. of Richmond; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. David Lewis. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at his residence. Memorial donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church or Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad.
