Hill and Company Funeral Home. Officiating ministers will be Dr. D.N. Vore, the Rev. J.S. Gresham and the Rev. J.S. Hopkins. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. He was the son of the late William and Texanna Vaughan Uzzell, of Isle of Wight County. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sally Bland Uzzell; a daughter, Mrs. W.H. Bowers, Jr., both of Suffolk; a son, Guy Melvin Uzzell of Kankakee, Illinois; a brother, Ocie Uzzell, of Isle of Wight County; a granddaughter, Mrs. Marjorie G. Cole, of Suffolk; and a grandson, Roland Herman Gray, of Middlesex, England; a great granddaughter, Karen Renee Cole of Suffolk; several nieces and nephews. ****************************************************************************** RITES HELD HERE FOR VANAKIN UZZELL Funeral services for Vanakin Uzzell, who died Sunday morning at his home at 513 North Main Street, were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the I.O. Hill and Company Funeral Home. The services were conducted by the Rev. Joseph S. Gresham, pastor of the Oxford Methodist Church, Dr. Duane N. Vore, pastor of the Suffolk Christian church, and the Rev. J.S. Hopkins pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial took place in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Lee Everett, accompanied by Mrs. Claudia Jacobs, sang as a solo "Sunrise". Mrs. Everett and Mrs. Ashby Miles sang as a duet "Haven of Rest". The pall was of red roses white gladioli, white asters and baby’s breath. Active pallbearers were J.S. Carter, Charlie B. Pearce, A.W. Livesay, Dudley N. Rollings, Raymond H. Gray, Edgar L. Bradshaw, Robert Oden and Herbert A. Bradshaw. ****************************************************************************** VANAKIN UZZELL, 78, BURIED JULY 5TH AT SUFFOLK Vanakin Uzzell, 78, died at 4 a.m. July 5, 1953, at his home 513 North Main Street, in Suffolk, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Uzzell was the son of the late William and Mrs. Texanna Vaughan Uzzell of Isle of Wight County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sallie Bland Uzzell; a daughter, Mrs. W.H. Bowers Jr., also of Suffolk; a son, Guy Melvin Uzzell of Kankakee, Ill.; a brother, Ocie Uzzell, of Isle of Wight County; two grandchildren, Mrs. Marjorie G. Coles, of Suffolk, and Roland Herman Gray of Middlesex, England and a great-grandchild, Karen Renee Soles, of Suffolk. The body was taken to the I.O. Hill and Company Funeral Home where funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Duane N. Vore, pastor of Suffolk Christian Church; the Rev. Joseph S. Gresham, pastor of Oxford Methodist Church, and the Rev. Julian S. Hopkins, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mar 1874, appears in the 1900 Census in Ward 3, Newport News, boarding with widower Millie COKER & others. His father is given as b. Maryland {wrong}. Vanakin 1m. 21 Nov 1900 "Nancy" Mary H. Stransbury. She eloped with one of his brothers, Sep 1902. The 1860 Census also gives b. Southampton. He died a widower 27 May 1893 in Isle of Wight Co., and the youngest children were "farmed out."
