     SUFFOLK FUNERALS 

  MRS. JOSEPHINE UMPHLETTE 

  Suffolk, Sept. 15 - Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine Umphlette were 
conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m., at Cypress Chapel Christian Church, by the Rev. 
J.M. Roberts, assisted the Rev. Dr. I.W. Johnson.  Active pallbearers were 
F.R. Umphlette, W.R. Harrell, F.W. Skinner, J.R. Pierce, T.H. Wilkins, E. 
Horton, Fred Harrell, W.A. Harrell; honorary, C.T. Horton, B.F. Savage, R.L. 
Ashley, Preston Byrd, W.T. Baker, David Duke.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery. 


Josephine (BRIGGS; Mrs. Riddick R.) UMPHLET [UMPHLETTE], 
b. 17 Jan 1859*, Gates Co., NC, d. 12 Sep 1926, Nansemond Co., 
interred in Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery*, 14 Sep 1926, 
"Virginian-Pilot & Norfolk (VA) Landmark," Vol. 105, No. 78, 
   Thurs., Sep. 16, 1926, p. 13

The 1900 Census - Suffolk, Nansemond Co. - gives b. Feb 1848. 

Her husband was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in 
   Riddick's Company, 59th VA Militia.
