All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILBUR JUDSON VAUGHAN Aged Man’s Body Taken from River Wilbur Vaughan, 69, of Dinwiddie Street, Accidently Drowned The body of Wilbur Vaughan, 69, of 315 Dinwiddie Street, reported missing from his home since yesterday, was found floating in the Elizabeth river today at the foot of London street. Vaughan was at one time employed by the Portsmouth-Norfolk county ferry in a supervisory capacity. The death was investigated by Detective J. M. Parker, of the Portsmouth police department, who said Vaughan evidently had fallen into the water. There was no evidence of foul play, he said. Mr. Vaughan was the husband of the late Florence (sic) Bradshaw Vaughan, and son of the late Katherine Hanna and Jesse T. Vaughan. He was a native of Holland, Va., residing here for a number of years. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Doris Savage, of Portsmouth; five sons, Gordon Vaughan, of Portsmouth; Woodrow Wilson Vaughan, of Norfolk; William and Paul Vaughan, U.S. Army and Leland Vaughan, USN; one brother, Dr. Carleton C. Vaughan, of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Buela Butler, of Norfolk; Mrs. Gertrude Smith, of Holland, and Mrs. Otelina (sic) Harrell, of Suffolk, and six grandchildren. The body was conveyed to the Richardson and Foster Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements. ******************************************************************************** Wilbur Vaughan, 69, a retired supervisor at the Portsmouth and Norfolk County Ferries, who drowned accidently Sunday in the harbor was buried today in Liberty Springs Churchyard, near Suffolk. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. at the Richardson and Foster Funeral Home. The Rev. A.B. Bass, pastor of Court Street Baptist Church officiating. Pallbearers were A.H. Howell, James A. Bunn, William A. Davenport, Phillip W. Whitehurst, Robert A. Hutchins and Robert Parsons. [Note: Wilbur Judson Vaughan was born May 4, 1876 and died October 14, 1945.
