VAN VALKENBURGH, NAVY PHYSICIAN, MED SCHOOL PROFESSOR POTOMAC, MD - Navy Medical Corps Capt. Wood Griffith Van Valkenburgh, 46, head of the rheumatology branch of the Internal Medical Service at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, died Tuesday in his home. He was also a staff physician at the center and an associate professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services Medical School in Bethesda. A native of East Orange, N.J., he was the husband of Mrs. Ellen Ellis Thomas van Valkenburgh and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul van Valkenburgh of Suffolk, Va. Capt. Van Valkenburgh, who lived in the Tidewater area a number of years, graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the Medical College of Virginia. He interned at the Bethesda center and completed his residency in Philadelphia and Richmond. He was also a diplomate in the American College of Physicians, specializing in internal medicine with a sub-specialty in rheumatology. A former staff physician at Portsmouth, Va., Naval Hospital, he also served as general medical officer on the Tutuila from 1960 to 1962. At the time of his death he was president of the District of Columbia Rheumatism Society. He was a member of the Oratorio Society of Washington, D.C., and was a serious student of classical music and an accomplished pianist in addition to being a choral singer. He was a member of Christ Church of Rockville and a member of its choir. Other survivors include a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Carter van Valkenburgh, of the home. A funeral will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Christ Church, 109 S. Washington St., Rockville. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, with R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Arthritis Foundation. Capt.
