All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOSHUA COTTINGHAM WEST, III JOSHUA WEST, EX-SUFFOLK MAYOR, DIES FUNERAL SET TODAY AT OXFORD METHODIST SUFFOLK, VA. - March 30 - (AP) Joshua C. West, III, 42, former Suffolk Mayor, died Thursday at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. West, Mayor here from 1947 until ill health forced his resignation in April, 1949, had been a patient at the hospital for the past month and had undergone an operation for stomach ulcers. The body was removed to the R.W. Baker Funeral Home here pending funeral rites at 4 p.m. Friday at Oxford Methodist Church with the Rev. C.T. Topping officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mr. West was elected to city council in June, 1947, elections on a so-called "youth ticket." An overwhelming choice in the election, he led the voting and later was installed as Mayor. Ill health brought his resignation from council. A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, served in the Pacific and was discharged at war’s end with the rank of major. He was a native of Suffolk, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. West, Jr. He attended Suffolk High School and Virginia Military Institute, graduating from the latter in 1933 with a bachelor of science degree. Mr. West had been active in the Suffolk Junior Chamber of Commerce and the American Red Cross and was a member of the Suffolk Rotary Club. He also was a member of Oxford Methodist Church and for many years was a teacher in the men’s Bible class. He is survived by his wife, three children, his parents, and three sisters.
