Wagner Dead, Was Jailer For City-County Charles L. Wagner, city and county jailer and deputy-sheriff, died this afternoon around 1:45. Mr. Wagner was widely known both in the city and in Nansemond county. His ability at keeping the jail clean and in A-1 condition had been frequently cited by State and Federal inspectors. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ****************************************************************************** Funeral Services Are Set Tomorrow For C. L. Wagner At Graveside Funeral services for Charles Lee Wagner, 63, widely-known throughout Virginia, deputy sheriff of Nansemond county and for the past several years jailer for the Suffolk-Nansemond jail, who died yesterday afternoon following an illness of several weeks, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock by Dr. John G. Truitt at the grave in Cedar Hill cemetery. The beloved jailer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Harrell Wagner; two sons, Charles Lee Wagner, Jr., and William Wilson Wagner, both of Suffolk; three daughters, Miss Maywood Wagner of Greenville, N.C.; Mrs. Jack Hart of Kinston, N.C., and Miss Laura Thomas Wagner of Suffolk; a sister, Mrs. Howard W. Williams of Suffolk; two half-brothers, Jeff Wagner of Norfolk and John Wagner of Texas; a stepmother, Mrs. Leila Wagner of Myrtle. He was a member of the State Sheriffs Association. During the past five years as jailer he had been cited frequently for his faithfulness, his loyalty and ability. Mr. Wagner was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 141, A.F. and A.M. at Driver and of Berea Christian Church. He was loved by all who knew and came in contact with him not only in his work but in private life. At the time of his death, which brought a shock throughout, the county and city, he was reported to have been feeling a little better and hope had been held for his recovery. The Nansemond jail was all in a gloom this morning after losing one of its best friends. Even the prisoners were affected by the loss of their caretaker. He was born in the county at the old Wagner home, now Bay Point, A. Obici's country home. In his earlier years he was one of the largest farmers of the Driver section. He was manager of the Glebe farm in Lower Parish for 18 years. He was a member of one of Nansemond county's pioneer families. Mr. Wagner, who was born in Nansemond County at the old Wagner home, now Bay Point, the A. Obici home, was the son of the late James Wagner and Mrs. Mary Henry Wilson Wagner, and in his earlier years was one of the largest farmers of the Driver section. For eighteen years he was manager of the Glebe farm in Lower Parish. He was a member of one of Nansemond County's pioneer families, and was also a member of Harmony Lodge No. 149, A.F. and A.M. at Driver and of Berea Christian Church. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Harrell Wagner; two sons, Charles Lee Wagner and William Wilson Wagner, both of Suffolk; three daughters, Miss Maywood Wagner, of Greenville, N.C.; Mrs. Jack Hart and Miss Laura Thomas Wagner, of Suffolk; a sister, Mrs. Howard H. The body was taken to the Funeral Home of I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral services will be conducted at the grave in Cedar Hill cemetery Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock by Dr. John G. Truitt. John, a WW-I veteran, d. 10 Nov 1957 at the V.A. Hospital in Houston, TX, and was buried in Conroe Cemetery, Conroe, TX. Their mother d. 27 Dec 1891 from childbirth; the Nansemond Co. D.Reg. (#23, Sleepy Hole Dist.) gives WAGONER. Their widowed father m. 15 Nov 1892 [Martha] Lelia ASHBURN, 32, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Sr. & Barbara "Barbary" (DARDEN) ASHBURN. The Nansemond Co. M.Reg. (#158) gives James as age 51, b. NJ, son of Adam & Mary E. WAGNER. The 1900 Census gives James as age 59, b. [Jun?] 1840, PA; his father, b. Germany; mother, Scotland. It is likely James is identical with the Confederate veteran (1840 - 1907) buried in Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery in Chesapeake. He served as a private in Co. I, 9th VA Infantry, and was detailed as a teamster.
