Whedbee Stricken On Street, Dean Of Suffolk Dentists Dies In Office Of R. J. & J. B. Norfleet At 9:30; Was Conscious To The End Dr. James Penniel Whedbee, 82, prominent Suffolk dentist, died suddenly here this morning at 9:30 from a heart attack. Death occurred in the real estate offices of R.J. and J.B. Norfleet, in the American Bank and Trust Company Bank building, where he had been assisted by Patrolman H.P. Murphy. Dr. Whedbee passed Officer Murphy at the bank corner around 8:20 this morning en route to an East Washington street laundry, and on his return, Officer Murphy noticed the dentist was walking unsteadily, and almost simultaneously Dr. Whedbee brushed against the officer and said: "I have an attack of some kind. I can't go any further. I'm gone." Last Words "Thanks" Murphy gave Dr. Whedbee his support and called some passers-by who assisted in carrying the stricken man to the Norfleet offices in the bank building. Dr. Whedhee was conscious and said to Officer Murphy, "You don't know how much I appreciate what you have done for me." Dr. L. W. White, physician, and intimate friend of Dr. Whedbee, was called at 9 o'clock, but Dr. Whedbee failed to respond to medical treatment and death came at 9:30. He was conscious of the friends who had gathered to his aid up until five minutes of his death, and gave them instructions where to carry his body if death came. Long Practice He made his home and his office headquarters at 158 West Washington street over the Employment Office. He was the dean of Suffolk dentists, having been in active practice here for over 50 years. Recently local dentists honored him by presenting him a cane in recognition of his long services to the profession. A native of Durants Neck, in Perquimans County, North Carolina, Dr. Whedbee was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Seth Sumner Whedbee. He received his education at the University of North Carolina and the Baltimore College of Dentistry. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a charter member of the Randolph Society, which recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. He served the church for many terms as a member of the vestry. A member of Suffolk Lodge No. 30 of the Masonic fraternity for approximately 56 years, he was one of the few Masons of Suffolk to hold the 50-year membership emblem. Highly Regarded Loved and respected, the tribute paid him by J.B. Norfleet his close friend: "He was the most liberal and big-hearted man I ever knew," summed up the feelings of all who knew him. As a young man, Dr. Whedbee was associated with the Jackson Lumber Company, of Whaleyville, during the lumber boom days and later worked with a cotton brokerage firm in Norfolk, before he took up the study of dentistry. He was associated earlier in his dentistry career in Suffolk with the late Dr. H.W. Campbell. Surviving Dr. Whedbee are three sisters, Mrs. Helene W. Newby, Miss Pattie Whedbee and Mrs. K.M. Newby; a brother, G.B. Whedbee, all of Hertford, N.C., and many other relatives, including two great grand nieces.
