WHITFIELD TAKEN BY DEATH Prominent Citizen Until Recently Active in Business Circles Dies Today at Home In Kimberly Section of City. Thomas J. Whitfield, 79, died today at his home on the Suffolk-Smithfield highway at 11:50 o’clock, after a short illness. He had been in failing health for several years. Mr. Whitfield was one of the most prominent farmers of this section, having lived here for the greater part of his life. He was born January 1, 1850, in Southampton county and moved to Suffolk when he was a young man. Mr. Whitfield was a member of the First Baptist Church of Suffolk. Mr. Whitfield is survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice Cutchins, of Suffolk, and the following sons and daughters: (Continued On Page Eight) T. J. Whitfield (Continued From Page 1) Davis A. Whitfield, of Tabannia, La.; T.J. Whitfield, Jr., of Norfolk; O.K. Whitfield, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Mrs. R. M. Petway, of Norfolk; Mrs. Pym Wilson, of Suffolk, and Miss Gladys Whitfield, of Suffolk. The funeral will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at the residence on the Smithfield road at 3 o'clock by the Rev. Dr. H.J. Goodwin, assisted by the Rev. Dr. W.W. Staley. Burial will be in the family lot in Cedar Hill cemetery and the active pallbearers will be: Floyd Oliver, E.F. Gillett, Bernard Godwin, William S. Holland, Presley Smith, P.D. Pruden, N.T. Gray and Lyman R. Brothers. Intimate friends of the deceased have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. ****************************************************************************** Whitfield Funeral Is Held Here Yesterday Funeral services for Thomas J. Whitfield, prominent resident of Nansemond county, who died Wednesday at his home in Kimberly, were held yestreday afternoon at the residence, conducted by the Rev. Dr. H.J. Goodwin, assisted by the Rev. Dr. W.W. Staley. Burial was in Cedar Hill cemetery. Active pallbearers will be: Floyd Oliver, E.F. Gillett, Bernard Godwin, W.S. Holland, Pressley Smith, P.D. Pruden, N.T. Gray and Lyman Brothers. Friends of Mr. Whitfield acted as honorary pallbearers. Thomas J.
