All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ George Whitley, Banker, Succumbs George Franklin Whitley, 72, vice president of the American Bank and Trust Company, died last night at 11:20 at Obici Memorial Hospital after an illness of several weeks. He lived at 329 Cedar Street. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. John C. Mitchell, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Walter H. Whichard, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, with Masonic rites at the graveside. Mr. Whitley had been associated with the American Bank for 45 years, during which time he was a member of the board of directors and at the time of his death, secretary of the board of directors. Mr. Whitley died three weeks after A.W. Ballard, also a vice president of the American Bank. Mr. Whitley was a member of Suffolk Masonic Lodge No. 30 AF and AM, the First Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class of the church. A native of Wakefield, he was the son of the late Joel Fauntleroy [sic; Flournoy] Whitley and Lellie [sic; Lillie] Moody Whitley of Isle of Wight County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dolly Ann Bell Whitley of the home; two daughters, Mrs. S. Burch Watson of Suffolk and Mrs. Claude Clifford Lilly of Atlanta, Ga., and a son George Franklin Whitley Jr., of Binghamton, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Cobb of Franklin, Mrs. Jeff Roberts of Newport News; two brothers, Sidney J. Whitley of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Willard F. Whitley of Washington; seven grandchildren said two great-grandchildren. [photo, captioned:] George F. Bell, 68, of Waycross, Ga., brother of Mrs. George Franklin Whitley of Suffolk, died unexpectedly today in Waycross. Funeral services will be conducted there Sunday at 4 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Parker Bell of the home, and two sons, June Bell of Savannah, Ga., and Frank L.
