All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SARAH AUGUSTA EPPES SAUNDERS WOODWARD AGED SUFFOLK WOMAN DEAD Mrs. Augusta Woodward, Beloved Through Area, Dies at Her Home Suffolk - Sept. 10 - Mrs. Augusta Eppes Saunders Woodward, 83, widow of Hersey Woodward, Sr., and daughter of the late Maj. James Saunders and Mrs. Diana Ophelia Eppes Saunders, died this morning at 4 o'clock at her home on North Main Street after a long illness. She was a member of an old and prominent family of Suffolk and Nansemond, her parents and grandparents having been pioneers in this section. She was born at the old Saunders' home on the White Marsh Road on October 22, 1858, and in February of 1880 married Hersey Woodward, Sr., who preceded her to the grave in 1932. She was the last of her generation, all of her brothers and sisters having preceded her in death. Surviving her are five sons and a daughter, Hersey Woodward, Jr., Richard Lafayette Woodward, Jr., Marmaduke Eppes Woodward and Thomas Lassiter Woodward, of Suffolk and James Saunders Woodward, of Hampton; Miss Marie Woodward, of Suffolk; the following grandchildren, Richard Delvis Woodward, of Ocean View; John Delvis Woodward, of Suffolk; Lieut. Gilbert Hume Woodward, U.S.A.; Jacob Long Woodward and Miss Sarah Saunders Woodward, of Suffolk; James Saunders Woodward, Jr., and Frank Thomas Woodward, of Hampton; two great- grandchildren, Vickie Anne and Myrnie Brown Woodward, of Ocean View. Mrs. Woodward was a member of the Christian Church for almost three- quarters of a century, having been affiliated with Cypress Christian Church in her girlhood and with the Suffolk Christian Church for almost 50 years. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the Suffolk Christian Church by the pastor, Dr. John G. Truitt, and burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Dr. Truitt will be assisted by Dr. H.J. Goodwin, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and by the Rev. Herbert N. Tucker, former rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Active pall-bearers will be the following sons and grandsons; Hersey Woodward, Jr., James Saunders, Marmakuke E. and Thomas L. Woodward, Richard Delves and John Delves Woodward, James S. Woodward, Jr. and Jacob L. Woodward.
