All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ DELAWARE THOMAS WORRELL SUFFOLK’S LAST OLD CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES Delaware Thomas Worrell, age 93 years, died Thursday afternoon at 1:10 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. D. Gardner, 123 N. Saratoga Street, after a long illness. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J.D. Gardner, of Suffolk, and one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Clara Bradshaw Worrell, of Newsoms, Va., ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the funeral home of I.O. Hill & Company, where it will remain until 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, at which time it will be taken to his late residence. Mr. Worrell was a veteran of the Civil War, and a member of the No. 158 Calvary Unit [sic*], he was also a member of the Newsoms Baptist church. During his active life he was a prominent farmer of Southampton County, Va. The funeral procession will leave the residence Saturday at 1 o'clock for the family cemetery in Newsoms, Virginia, where the services will be held at the grave at 3 o'clock conducted by the Rev. C.P. Cleveland, pastor of the Newsoms Baptist church, and Dr. H.J. Goodwin, pastor of the First Baptist church Suffolk. ****************************************************************************** Suffolk, April 5, Funeral services for Delaware Thomas Worrell were held Saturday afternoon a 3 o’clock at the grave in the family cemetery, conducted by the Rev. W.J. Work and the Rev. C.P. Cleveland. Dr. Work read Tennyson’s poem, "Crossing the Bar", and at the grave the Rev. C.P. Cleveland read "Asleep in Jesus." There were many handsome floral tributes and the casket was covered with a pall of Easter lilies and red rosebuds. Active pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased: Clifford Worrell, K.D. Worrell, Livious Worrell, Fred Worrell, Garland Hines, Joseph Debnam and Leroy Dail. Before leaving the residence of Mrs. J.D. Gardner of Saratoga Street, the funeral party paused for brief services at the home, with Scripture reading by the Rev. Mr. Cleveland and prayer by the Rev. William James Work. The application states he served in the 4th & 67th NC Infanttry, Co. D - entering service Oct 1864 in Hertford Co. & serving 'til the end of the war. His daughter Betty Sue (Mrs. Jesse Daniel) GARDNER is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk - Block W, Lot 44. Jesse was a dentist.
