Cemetery Location:  7.5 miles northeast of Shipman, Va., Go 4 miles east of 
                    Shipman, Virginia, on Route #56; thence 3.5 miles north 
                    (left) on Route #722.  Graveyard on west side of road.
                    Nelson County, Virginia

Garland Shepherd and wife Elizabeth who was a daughter of W.D. Liggon.  1847.

                   260.  For love and affection.
Liggon and Elsom descendants, present owners to date. (1937)

DESCRIPTION:

25 yards from the road in dense woods and underbrush in the old family burial 
grounds.   There are eleven graves without any markers, just plain old field 
rocks at the head and foot of the graves.  A barbed-wire fence surrounds it.  
There are a good many old oak, pine and cedar trees.  No flowers or shrubbery.  
Unkept.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:


James R. Elsom was one of Nelson’s County’s leading physicians before the War 
Between the States and also an out-standing Mason.  Bennet Henderson served in 
the War of 1812.
