NELSON COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Old Jones Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Old Jones cemetery: 1936 Oct. 8 Research made by Massie D. Thacker Cemetery Location: 2.5 miles northwest of Roseland, Virginia Nelson County, Virginia DATE: 1843. OWNERS: Descendants of Jones and Clarkson family. DESCRIPTION: Known as the “old Jones burial ground” it seems to have been quite a large one for a family cemetery, having room for between twenty and thirty graves. At present it is very much covered with undergrowth; and has only four markers, one of which is broken, and two of the others very much sunken. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following inscriptions were copied from the tombstones: Joshua Jones son of Thomas and Catherine Jones who was born January 28th 1788 and departed this life March 16th 1849 Sacred to the memory of James W. Clarkson Born June 1st 1820 Died Sept. 13th, 1844 Aged 24 Years 3 months & 13 days & was the only son of John & Eliza Clarkson Sacred to the memory of Catherine Jones Wife of Thomas Jones Who was born June 11th 1780 Departed this life March 3rd 1847 Sacred to the memory of Mathias Clarkson Son of James Wm. & M.C. Clarkson Who died Decr. 21, 1843 The Clarksons and Jones’ were very prominent people, being large slave holders, and many of their descendants still reside in this part of Nelson County, and are for the most part, fairly prosperous.
