Harrower Cemetery Location: 4 miles west of Wingina, Virginia, on C. & O. railroad, 7 miles east of Shipman, Virginia, on Route #56; thence 3 miles east on Route #656, a few yards below where the Mansion House once stood. Nelson County, Virginia DATE: 1756. OWNERS: Dr. William Cabell and his descendants. DESCRIPTION: In a grassy field under a large cedar tree, just a few yards below where the mansion once stood, is the large family burial ground of the Cabell family. It is enclosed with a heavy iron fence. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: On marble slabs are the following inscriptions: In memory of Nicholas Cabell Born February 9, 1776 Died Oct. 13, 1821 His friends cherished the memory of his fine intellect, and of his elecated sense of honor, and have never ceased to grieve that their fond hopes were extinguished in his early grave. In memory of Nicholas Cabell, Jr. Youngest son of Col. Nicholas Cabell Born Dec. 24, 1780 Died June 25, 1809 Age 28 years In memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Cabell Ware wife of Dr. William B. Ware, who was sometime a member of the Senate of Virginia and one of the Council of State. She was born May 5, 1776 and died Nov. 28, 1802 age 26 years In memory of Mrs. Hannah Cabell wife of Col. Nicholas Cabell and daughter of Co. George Carrington of Cumberland Born April 16, 1752 and died Aug. 7, 1817 Age 67 years In memory of Col. Nicholas Cabell He took a decided and active part in behalf of the American Revolution, engaging with zeal in the military service of Virginia, and afterward sat for 16 years in the senate of Virginia, from 1785 to 1801 Born Oct. 26, 1750 Died Aug. 18, 1803 Age 53 years Cary Charles Cabell Youngest son of N. Francis and Ann B. Cabell Born Nov. 20, 1851 and taken away May 31, 1856 This stone covers the ashes of Francis Hartwell Cabell eldest son of N. Francis and Ann. B. Cabell Born Jan. 27, 1833 Died Oct. 10, 1844 Age 11 years Ann Blaws daughter of John H. and Ann B. Cocke and first wife of N. Francis Cabell Born Dec. 15, 1811 at Bramo Recess, Fluvanna Co., Va. Died Feb. 20, 1862 at Liberty Hall, Nelson County, Va. This stone covers the remains of Mrs. Margaret Read Cabell wife of Nicholas Cabell, Jr. and daughter of Col. Samuel W. Venable of Prince Edward Co. Born Oct. 20, 1782 Died May 31, 1857 Age 75 years In memory of Mrs. Mary Ann Carrington relict of Captain Benjamin Carrington of Cumberland County and daughter of Col. Nicholas Cabell of Liberty Hall Nelson County, Va. Born Jan. 2, 1785 Died Feb. 6, 1850 Age 65 On a tall square monument are these words: Near this spot lie the earthly remains of Dr. William Cabell of Wiltshire, England, the founder of the family in Virginia which bears his name. Those of Elizabeth Cabell, his wife, and the mother of his children, who died Sept. 21, 1756 lie by his side. A Christian lady greatly beloved of her family and friends, and a pattern of domestic virtue, William Cabell emigrated from Warminster, England to the Colony of Virginia about 1723, or 1724. Born March 9, 1687 Died Apr. 12, 1774 In honor of their memory was this stone erected by the piety of their grandson, Joseph C.
