NELSON COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Soldiers Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Soldiers cemetery: 1936 Apr. 9 Research made by Massie D. Thacker Cemetery Location: 3.5 miles northwest of Norwood a station on the James River division of the Chesapeak and Ohio R.R. on Route #722. Take Route #655 at Norwood, go west 3.25 miles to intersection of Route #722, follow this Route about .25 mile. Site is just off side off of Highway to the west. Nelson County, Virginia DATE: About 1862. OWNERS: (blank) DESCRIPTION: There are 25 or 30 graves in this cemetery, the signs of which can be plainly seen, but there are only two markers, one being a marble shaft the base of which is about 20x20 inches, about 8 feet high the top being about 8x8 inches. The other marker is a marble slab about 12 inches wide, by 20 inches high. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The only inscription on the marble shaft is: “Confederate Dead” This is cut in a curve across one side of the base. The inscription on the marble slab is: Jonathan Poe died August 20, 1862 aged 21 years 7 days These soldiers were not killed in battle, but died in a hospital which still stands near this burial ground, but is now used as a residence.
