Harrower Cemetery Location: .5 mile southwest of Wingina, Virginia on Route #637, thence .1 mile west on private road. Graveyard in rear of “Soldiers Joy” mansion. Nelson County, Virginia DATE: About 1822. OWNERS: Samuel J. Cabell, Daniel Higginbotham and his descendants. DESCRIPTION: At the rear of Soldiers Joy mansion, in a grassy field, under old cedar trees, is the “Soldiers Joy” graveyard. It was originally enclosed by a rock wall but this has been replaced with an iron fence. There was once a tall rock pyramid in the graveyard, but this has fallen down and only a few of the rocks are left. It is a tradition that Colonel Samuel Jordon Cabell and his wife were buried under this pyramid. Colonel Cabell died August 4, 1818 and Mrs. Cabell died May 15, 1814. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Marble slabs inscribed as follows: In memory of John Higginbotham who was born in the county of Amherst on the 12th day of April 1772, and died in the town of Warminster on the 22nd of Feb. 1822. In memory of Jesse Higginbotham who was born in Amherst county on the 23rd day of December 1779 and died at Soldiers Joy on the 8th of June, 1836 In memory of Daniel Higginbotham who was born in county of Amherst on the 27th day of March 1781 and died at Soldiers Joy on the 10th day of August 1845 In memory of Jesse Higginbotham Born Jan. 29, 1822 Died of consumption Feb. 27, 1849 He was the son of Reuben A. Higginbotham and Lucretta his wife, formerly Lucretta Vaughan of Nashville, Tenn. The deceased intermarried with Miss Elvira M. Henry in the month of May preceding his death and she survived him as desired by him before death. His remains are here buried by the side of his uncle, Daniel Higginbotham, deceased.
