DEED: Jane Camden to W. L. Dickie, 1856 SOURCE: Nelson County Deed Book 14, Page 409 CONTRIBUTOR: Sylvia Ray ------------------------------------------------------------ This Indenture made and entered into this 20th day of February 1856 between Jane Camden of the first part, Joseph Ligon of the second part, and W. L. Dickie of the third part, all of Nelson County and State of Virginia, witnesseth, that the said Jane Camden stands justly indebted to the said Wm L. Dickie in the sum of one hundred and seventy five dollars and three cents due by bond bearing even date with this deed, and the said Jane Camden being willing and desirous to secure the payment of said debt more fully to the said W. L. Dickie, doth in consideration thereof and in the further consideration of one dollar of lawful money of Virginia to her in hand paid by the said Joseph Ligon at or before the ensealing of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath given, granted, bargained and sold and by these presents doth give, grant, alien, bargain, and sell unto the said Joseph Ligon, his heirs, executors and administrators or assigns the following property to wit: one negro woman named Priscilla, four head cows and their increase, twelve head hogs and their increase, household and kitchen furniture consisting of one metal clock, two feather beds and their furniture, one cupboard, tables chairs and plantation utensils; to have and to hold the said property herein mentioned and the said Jane Camden doth for herself, her heirs, executors and administrators, warrant to the said Joseph Ligon a good and perfect title in fee simple to the said property, nevertheless, the said Jane Camden shall be permitted to retain in quiet and peaceable possession of the said property until the first day of January 1858, when it shall be lawful if the said Jane Camden still remains in default of payment of the said debt and interest or the cost for drawing or recording this deed or any part thereof, for the said Joseph Ligon, his executors or administrators after having advertised said property for ten days or more at some one or more public places in the neighborhood for sale and designating the place of sale, to sell the aforesaid property for cash to the highest bidder, and out of the monies arising from such sale, first pay a fee of five dollars for drawing this deed, then the cost for recording executing this deed and then the said debt and interest and the balance, if any, to the said Jane Camden or legal representative.
