DEED: John F. Camden and Sally his wife Deed of Trust, 1848 SOURCE: Nelson County Deed Book 12, Page 376 CONTRIBUTOR: Sylvia Ray ------------------------------------------------------------ This Indenture made and entered into this 25th day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven between Sylvanus Meeks and Sally his wife of the first part, and John F. Camden and Wiatt Camden each of the County of Nelson and State of Virginia of the second part, witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand three hundred dollars to him in hand paid by the said John F. Camden and Wiatt Camden by virtue of one execution against Wiatt Camden for which he confessed a judgment for six hundred and fifty dollars with the legal interest and costs thereon and three executions against John F. Camden for two hundred dollars cash and one execution for fifty dollars with the said John F. Camden confessed judgment on with the legal interest and cost thereon, he the said Sylvanus Meeks and Sally his wife hath sold and by these presents doth hereby grant, bargain and sell unto the said John F. Camden, his heirs and assigns, two certain tracts or parcels of land lying and being in the County of Nelson and Amherst, State of Virginia, on the head waters of Tye and Piney River, one containing eight hundred and nine acres by surveyors plot No. 4 delivered to the said John F. Camden and the said plot showing the lines and boundary in said plot also which can be seen in the deed made upon record made by Wales Massie to the said Sylvanus Meeks and the other tract or parcel of land containing one thousand three hundred and fifty three acres by surveyors plot No. 5 hereby sold by Sylvanus Meeks and Sally his wife to Wiatt Camden showing the lines and boundary in said plot also which can be seen in the deed made by the said Walker Massie to the said Meeks by virtue of a power of attorney in fact from Thomas E. Massie to said Walker Massie, both tracts was a part of the lands of Major Thomas E. Massie divided to his grandsons Walker Massie and Thomas E. Massie allotted by the Commissioners which can be found on record in the Clerk's Office of Nelson County and State of Virginia, and the said Sylvanus Meeks and Sally his wife will forever warrant and defend the right and title such as is vested in them by the said Thomas E. Massie, Walker Massie to the two aforesaid tracts or parcels of land with its appurtenances thereto free from the claims or demands of all and every person or persons whatsoever, only to them the said John F. Camden and Wiatt Camden, their heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, now and forever to their only proper use. Ligon, Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid and acknowledged the foregoing deed to which they had subscribed their names to be their act and deed and desired it to be certified to the Clerk of the County Court of Nelson to be recorded. Given under our hands and seals the day and year first written. January 3, 1848 Wm Massie {seal} Littleberry N. Ligon {seal} Nelson County, to wit: This day Sally C. Meeks, the wife of Sylvanus Meeks, and a party to the foregoing deed personally appeared before us, Wm Massie and Littleberry N. Ligon, Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid and after having been by us examined separate and apart from her husband having the foregoing deed fully explained to her state that she had not been by her husband persuaded but had willingly signed the same and wished not to retract it. Given under our hands and seals this 3rd day of January 1848 Wm Massie {seal} Littleberry N. Ligon {seal} Nelson County, to wit: This day John F. Camden and Wiatt Camden personally appeared before us, James S. Penn and Littleberry N. Ligon, Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid, and acknowledged the foregoing deed to which they had subscribed their names to conveying by Sylvanus Meeks and Sally his wife, eight hundred and nine acres of land to John F. Camden and thirteen hundred and fifty three acres of land to Wiatt Camden, to be their act and deed and desired it to be certified to the Clerk of the County Court of Nelson to be recorded.
