DEED: John F. Camden and Sally his wife Deed of Trust, 1848 SOURCE: Nelson County Deed Book 12, Page 378 CONTRIBUTOR: Sylvia Ray ------------------------------------------------------------ This Indenture made and entered into this 22nd day of September in the year of our Lord 1848 between John F. Camden and Sally his wife of the County of Nelson and State of Virginia of the first part, and James B. Shelton of the County of Louisa and State of Virginia of the second part, witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand dollars to them the said John F. Camden and Sally his wife, in hand paid by the said James B. Shelton to them in hand at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the said John F. Camden and Sally his wife, hath and by these presents do hereby grant, bargain and sell, and deliver unto the said James B. Shelton, a one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Nelson and Amherst on the head waters of Tye and Piney Rivers composed of two entrys making all eight hundred and nine acres, be the same more or less, by Plot No. 4, it being a part of the lands which Major Thomas Massie left to his grandsons and this lot being assigned to Walker Massie and conveyed by the said Walker Massie to Sylvanus Meeks and by Sylvanus Meeks to the said John F. N45-1/4 S105 poles to pointers on saplings corner to Thos Massie entry of 15 acres N5 S21-1/2 poles to a spanish oak corner to John Campbell, dec'd, with his lines N27 W25 poles to pointers N56 E126 poles to pointers S 61-1/2 E47 poles to a fallen chestnut amongst pointers on saplings on the east side and near the top of the blue ridge mountains, N55 E36 poles to pointers N55 S90 poles to the beginning at a white oak amongst pointers corner to James Jones survey of 204 acres and with it N58-1/2 S200 poles to pointers on a chestnut and 2 small chestnut oaks corner to James Jones survey of 110 acres and with it S66 W82 poles to a fallen down spanish oak amongst pointers N5 E69 poles to a chestnut on the top of Little Mount Pleasant S5 W38 poles to the beginning, the first mentioned tract containing 735 acres and the last mentioned tract containing 74 acres, the two tracts or entrys together making in all eight hundred and nine acres agreeable to the lots called No. 4 which was allotted to the said Walker Massie on the division of the lands by the commissioner of the land divided by Major Thos. Massie, dec'd, to his grandsons which lot No. 4 was allotted to the said Walker Massie to have and to hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of land with all its appurtenances and all and every singular advantages thereto belonging and the said John F. Camden and Sally his wife, for themselves, their heirs, executors, administrators and assigns will forever warrant and defend the right and title to the aforesaid tract or parcel of land free from the claims and demands of all and every other person or persons whatsoever only to the said James B. Shelton, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns now and forever to the only proper use and behoof of him the said James B. Shelton. Penn, Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid and acknowledge the foregoing deed to which they had subscribed their names to, to be their act and deed and desire it to be certified by us to the Clerk of the said County to be recorded. Camden, personally appeared before us, Littleberry N. Ligon and James F. Penn, Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid and having first by us begin examined separate and apart from her husband and having the foregoing deed fully explained to her stated that she had not been by her husband persuaded but had willingly assigned the same and wished not to retract it.
