DEED: Hughes Deed to Francis J. Campbell and Trustees SOURCE: Nelson County Deed Book 13, Page 550 CONTRIBUTOR: Sylvia Ray -------------------------------------------------------------- This Deed made and entered into this the 18th day of June 1853 between Benjamin J. Hughes and his wife Lucinda Hughes of the first part and Francis J. Campbell, Henry W. Hatter, and Samuel Gay, Trustees, of the other part, all of the County of Nelson and State of Virginia, witnesseth that the said Benjamin J. Hughes and Lucinda Hughes hath for and in consideration of certain promises give and grant unto the said Francis J. Campbell, Henry W. Hatter, and Samuel Gay, Trustees, a certain lot of land on which the Tye River Church now stands known as the Thomas Taylor flat near Demasters farm and adjoining the land of William B. Coffey, the said Benjamin J. Hughes and Lucinda Hughes grants and deeds this lot of land for the benefit of the neighborhood as a place of religious worship to be held by the said Trustees and their successors forever for that purpose and no other, also to be free to all religious denominations in consideration of which the said Benjamin J. Hughes and Lucinda Hughes doth warrant the title of said lot to be free from any encumbrance forever. Witness the following seals and signatures this the day and year first above written. Benjamin J. Hughes {seal} Lucinda Hughes {seal} County of Nelson, to wit: I Nathaniel Bowles, a Justice of the Peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia, certify that Benjamin J. Hughes whose name is signed to the writing above and bearing date on the 18th day of June 1853, has acknowledged the same before me in my County aforesaid. Given under my hand this 18th day of June 1853. Nathaniel Bowles, JP State of Virginia County of Nelson, to wit: We, S. S. Harris and Nathaniel Bowles, Justices of the Peace for the County of Nelson in the State of Virginia, do certify that Lucinda Hughes the wife of Benjamin J. Hughes, whose names are signed to the within writing bearing date on the 18th day of June 1853, personally appeared before us in the County aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the writing aforesaid fully explained to her, she the said Lucinda Hughes acknowledged the said writing to be her act and declared that she had willingly executed the same and does not wish to retract it. This Deed was this day returned unto said Clerk's Office duly certified by a Justice of the Peace for the acknowledgment of Benjamin Hughes and relinquishment of dower also duly certified by two Justices of the Peace as to Mrs. L.
