Deed: William B. Coffey & Joseph H. Shelton, 1860 Source: Nelson County VA Deed Bk 16, Pages 56 and 57 Contributor: Shirley Houk This Deed made this 11th day of March in the year eighteen hundred and sixty one between William B. Coffey of the County of Nelson and State of Virginia of the one part and Joseph H. Shelton of said County and State of the other part Witnesseth That the said Wm B. Coffey doth hereby grant unto the said Joseph H. Shelton the following property to wit. One tract of land lying upon the waters of Tye River adjoining the lands of Francis Campbell and others containing four hundred and seventeen acres more or less. One negro man Adam, one negro boy named Davy and a girl named Phillis (Adam is supposed to be about 18 or 19 years of age Davy about 14 or 15 and Phillips (sic) about ten or eleven years old) in trust to secure to Joseph S. Harris the sum of Ten hundred and forty nine dollars and Sixty four cents, $1049.64 due by bonds dated the eleventh day of Mar In eighteen hundred Sixty one. It is hereby convented and agreed between the parties aforesaid that whenever the said Joseph S. Harris shall require the payment of the above mentioned Bond of said Coffey and in default of payment that it shall be the duty of the said Shelton when required by the said Harris after giving thirty days notice by advertising at several public places in the neighborhood and as also upon the Court house door the Court previous to sell the aforesaid property to the highest bidder at Nelson Court house on Court-day in front of the style. The property before mentioned and after satisfying the aforesaid bonds due Joseph S. Harris and whatever interest may accrue on the sum as well as all other necessary expenses attending. The same also for recording this deed, the overplus if any to the said Wm B. Coffey his heirs or assigns.
