DEED: N. L. Martin and Wife to Hudson Martin SOURCE: Nelson Co., VA Deed Book 16, Page 336 CONTRIBUTOR: Sylvia Ray ----------------------------------------------------------- This Indenture witnesseth that whereas in the year 1856 we did in consideration of our natural love and affection for our son Hudson Martin give to him a certain tract of land known as the Martin Mills property being the land on which our brother John M. Martin lived and died and whereas our son Hudson Martin in full faith of this gift did expend much money and labour on said property and also in full faith of our gift aforesaid, did sell said land to Garrett W. Martin. Now in as much as we have never before formally conveyed what we did in fact give this Indenture witnesseth that in consideration of our natural love and affection as aforesaid for our son Hudson Martin and furthermore because it would now be unjust for him to lose the money which he expended on this property. Therefore in further consideration of said money to enable him to execute his deed to Garrett W. Martin for said land according to his contract with him. We do and have by this Indenture given, granted and sold with general warranty of title to our son Hudson Martin and his heirs forever all our right, title, and interest to and in the aforesaid tract of land. In witness whereof we have set our hands and seals this 14th day of September 1865. N. L. Martin [seal] Elizabeth A. Martin [seal] Nelson County to wit: I, John W. Dickinson, Justice of the Peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do certify that N. L. Martin whose name is signed to the writing above bearing the date the 14th day of September 1865 has acknowledged the same before me in my County aforesaid. Given under my hand this 15th day of September 1865. Jno W. Dickinson, JP Nelson County to wit: We, John W. Dickinson and Moses H. Fitzpatrick, Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do certify that Elizabeth A. Martin, the wife of N. L. Martin whose names are signed to the foregoing writing bearing the date the 14th day of September 1865 and being examined privily and apart from her husband and having the writing explained to her, she the said Elizabeth A. Martin has acknowledged the same to be her act and that she had willingly signed the same and did not wish to retract it. Given under our hands this 15th day of September 1865. Jno W.
