Contributor: Shirley Houk This Deed made this 21st day of September 1860, by and between John Thompson Jr of the County of Amherst Virginia of the one part, and Mrs. M C Massie guardian of her son Hope W Massie of the County of Nelson and same State of the other part: Witnesseth that the said John Thomson Jr for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand & forty five dollars cash in hand paid unto him by the said M C Massie, hath and doth hereby grant, bargain & sell unto the said M C Massie one tract or parcel of mountain land, situated lying and being in the County of Nelson and bounded as follow to wit: Beginning on a leading ridge in the line of Edmund F Coffey tract, thence up said ridge to the top of the big Depriest Mountain, then along the leading ridge from the big Depriest Mountain to the little Depriest Mountain, thence on said Mountain to ______ lines, thence with same to a leading ridge, thence down said ridge to David Allen’s lines; thence with the said last mentioned lines to the lines of the lands of the estate of William Massie deceased, thence with the last mentioned lines to the beginning, and is supposed to contain about three thousand five hundred acres be the same more or less the said sale & purchase being in gross(?) and not per acre - And the said John Thompson Jr hereby covenants and agrees with the said M C Massie to warrant to her, her heirs & assigns, generally a good title to the said tract of land. But it is distinctly understood and agreed that within the said boundary two small ___ on the little Depriest Mountain are contained, one now owned by Jacob Warwick of about 15 acres & the other by the estate of William Massie deceased of about 20 acres and that as to neither of the said ____ the said John Thompson Jr sets up no claim and therefore only warrants specially: Witness the following signatures & seals John Thompson Jr (seal) M C Massie Guardian (seal) Hope W Massie (seal) Amherst County to wit: I Robert H. Thornton a justice of the peace for the County of Amherst with the State of Virginia do hereby certify that John Thompson Jr, who hath signed the foregoing deed bearing date the 21st September 1863, personally appeared before and in my county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and given under my hand this 21st day of September 1863.
