DEED: Annah Dillard and James Mays Jr. to Zachariah Mays, April 29, 1817 SOURCE: Nelson County, VA Deed Book 2, page 589 CONTRIBUTOR: Valeria Burd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This Indenture made the Twenty ninth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight Hundred and seventeen, Between James Mays Junr and Annah his wife of the one part and Zachariah Mays of the other part; Witnesseth that for and in Consideration of the sum of Fifteen hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said Zachariah Mays before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, they the said James Mays Jr and Annah his wife have bargained and sold and do by these presents bargain sell and deliver alien enfeoff and confirm to the said Zachariah Mays and to his heirs forever in fee simple the following Tract or parcel of Land to wit Two Hundred and Fifty acres of Land situate and being in the County of Nelson and State of Virginia and adjoining to and bounded by the Lands of James Repson, the Lands belonging to the Estate of Joseph Loving Deceased and the Lands of Robert Mays together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging. To have and to Hold the Land aforesaid with all and singular its appurtenances to the only use and behoof of him the said Zachariah Mays and his heirs forever in fee simple and the said James Mays Junr and Annah his wife for themselves their Heirs executors and administrators ~ covenant and agree to warrant and forever defend the Land aforesaid with its appurtenances to the said Zachariah Mays and his heirs forever in fee simple, free from the Claim title or demand of all and every person whomsoever. In Witness whereof the said James Mays Junr. And Annah his wife have hereunto set their Hands and seals the day and year above written ~ James Mays Annah Mays Signed Sealed and Delivers in the presence of Nelson County Court Robert Rives and James Murphy We, Magistrates for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia, do hereby Certify that the within James Mays Junr., party to the within deed of conveyance of Real estate of Zachariah Mays bearing date the 29th day of April 1817 personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and Deed and directs us to Certify his said acknowledgement to the Clerk of the County Court of Nelson, that the same my be admitted to record accordingly. Given under our hands and seals this 29th day of April one thousand eight hundred and seventeen ~ Robert Rives James Murphy Nelson County to wit: We, Robert Rives and James Murphy, Justices of the Peace in the County aforesaid, do hereby Certify that Annah Mays the wife of James Mays parties to a Certain deed of the conveyance of real Estate of Zachariah Mays bearing date the 29th of April 1817 and hereto annexed personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the deed fully explained to her, she the said Annah Mays acknowledged the same, the same to be her act and deed and declared that she had willingly signed sealed and delivered the same and that she wished not to retract it.
