Albemarle Co., Oct. 3, 1749, in that part later Amherst and then Nelson. Enlisted June 16, 1779 as private in Capt. Porter's Co., Col. Fontaine's Regt. Of Guards at Albemarle Barracks, later commanded by Col. Taylor and known as the "Convention Guards," marched as guard to prisoners when they were moved to Winchester. An officer at the Barracks, James Garland, was killed by a young man on Post name Mansfield. Spotswood Garland, Nelson Co., testified to the following return made by Capt. Porter to Hudson Martin, then Paymaster of the Regt. Of Guards appointed by Patrick Henry, Esq., Governor of Virginia: "William Allen was furnished 1 coat, 1 vest, 2 pr. Breeches, 4 shirts, 3 pr. Stockings, 7 pr. Shoes, 1 hat, 1 stock, 1 pr. Buckles, 1 blanket, 1 pr. Overalls & 1 hunting shirt while in service." Samuel Arrington, Nelson Co., testified he also was at the Barracks; William Fontaine commanded the Regt. for a short time; Francis Taylor commanded thereafter. Dolly Allen, widow of pensioner (his 2nd wife) applied May 31, 1854, from Kanawha Co., Va., aged 68, stating her husband died March 6, 1838, at Nelson Court House Va. William H. & Landon C. Allen were with their mother when she applied, & they testified the accompanying leaf was torn out of the Family Record made by their father: William and Dolly Allen, his wife, were married December 16, 1807. May 9, 1822 James M. Allen, b, July 8, 1825 [living in Kanawha Co. 1855] Elizabeth M. Allen, b. April 14, 1828 Andrew Jackson Allen, b. June 10, 1831 In 1851, John Allen son of the soldier, was living in Nelson Co., Va.
