  Frances Phipps Beatty, 78, of Freshwater Cove Community, Lovingston, Va., 
died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at her residence.
  Born January 26, 1925, in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late 
Alma Jane Coffey.
  Fran was a homemaker and a member of Woodland Baptist Church of Arrington.
  She is survived by three daughters, Jacqueline M. Mays and her husband, 
William, of Lovingston, Catherine Jane Hauter and her husband, Scott, of 
Neptune, N.J., and Linda Lee Phipps of Deal, N.J.; a son, Michael B. Phipps 
and his wife, Donna of Haymarket, Va.; nine grandchildren, Katherine F. Pearson, 
John Mabrey, Jay Mabrey, Robert M. Siliato, Mark C. Siliato, Alexandria Nash, 
Olivia Nash, Victoria Cronkey and Sierra Cronkey; and six great-grandchildren.
  A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Woodland 
Baptist Church with the Rev. David M. Blevins officiating. Interment will follow 
in the Mays Family Cemetery.
  The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the 
funeral home.
  In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of contributions to the 
Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, 
Va. 22911 or the Nelson County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 44, Faber, Va. 22938.
