Obituary: Joseph Melvin Bryant, Age 93 Source: The Daily Progress, Saturday, November 01, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow, aquaair@erols.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TYE RIVER - Joseph Melvin (Mel) Bryant, 93, of Tye River Community, Amherst, passed away Friday Morning, October 31, 2003 at the Lovingston Health Care Center. Born Sept. 10, 1910, in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Joseph William Bryant and Maggie Jennings Bryant. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Gowen Bryant and 12 siblings. He was a retired farmer and carpenter and retired from John Stewart Walker Contractors of Lynchburg. He was a faithful member of St. Stephens Baptist Church at Tye River. He is survived by his step-daughters Othello McGalister, Barbara Hudson and husband, Henry and Eleanor Martin and husband, Keith all of Amherst. Gene Scruggs, Phyllis Strickler and husband, Harry all of Madison Heights and his step-son, T.F. Gowen and wife Shirley of Madison Heights; a sister, Alice McGann of Newport News; a dedicated nephew, Harry Joe Bryant of Shipman and several other nieces and nephews; and special friend and caregiver, Newton Bailey of Amherst. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:00 P.M. at St. Stephens Baptist Church with Rev. Jake Stewart officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and all other times at the residence of Eleanor and Keith Martin at Tye River. The family suggest that Memorials take the form of contributions to St. Stephens Church or to the Church Cemetery fund at 411 Falling Rock Drive, Amherst, Va. 24572.
