"Bill" Carter, 72, of Route 1, died at 12:01 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 20) at Piedmont Health Care Center, Charlottesville. He was born Sept. 11, 1916, in Greenfield, a son of Howard E. and Noble (Puckett) Carter. He was a member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church. He retired from DuPont Co. in 1972 with 31 years of service and worked with his son at Blue Ridge Service Station in Waynesboro until his recent illness. In addition to his father, of Nellysford, he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice M. Carter of Faber; two sons, Wayne Carter of Waynesboro and Irvine Carter of Fort Worth, Texas; one brother, Somers E. Carter of Nellysford; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Wood of Dooms, Mrs. Hazel Bryant of Fishersville and Mrs. Christa Graves of Crozet; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Waynesboro chapel of Etter Funeral Home by the Revs. Tommy Toms, Ron Sathe and Cecil Rhoads, with burial in Wintergreen Christian Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Trent, Burt Crossland, Jack Truslow, Jerry Ponds, Herbert Truslow and Buddy Truslow. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Lewis, Elwood Small, Gary Small, Ronnie Patrick, Robert Willis, Ogden N. Walsh, David Alford, Danny Whitley, Roy Eaves and Mike Fitzgerald.
