Carter, 76, of Route 2 died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday in Waynesboro Community Hospital. She was born in Nelson County, May 30, 1900, a daughter of the late Alex and Rose Fitzgerald Puckett. She was a member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church and the ladies auxiliary of the church. Surviving are her husband, Howard E. Carter; three sons, Wilson H. Carter and Somers E. Carter, both of Nellysford, and Lewis J. Carter of Afton; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Hazel) Bryant and Mrs. Lertie P. (Annie) Wood, both of Waynesboro, and Mrs. Rufus (Chris) Graves Sr. of Crozet; a sister, Mrs. Fannie Thompson of Charlottesville; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grand- children and one great-great-grandchild. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Rockfish Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Riley West and the Rev. Wayne Carter, with burial in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Rufus Graves, Randy Carter, Wayne Carter, Howard Wood, William Wood, Warren Wood, Lewis Gentry and William Bryant. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Davis, Gr. Robert Sheffield, Paige Harris, H. T. Page Jr., Pearson Small, Chesley Puckett, Joe Lawhorne and Jim Martin.
