Obituary: George Benjamin Cross, 2002 Source: The News Leader, September 20, 2002 Contributor: Charlie Truslow ------------------------------------------------------------ AFTON -- George Benjamin "Ben" Cross, 61, of 9626 Old Turnpike Road, Afton, formerly of Lyndhurst, died Thursday (Sept. 19, 2002) at his home. He was born July 8, 1941, at Bristol, Tenn., to Harry Kyle and Gertrude Steppe Cross. He was the owner of Ben Cross Fencing and former owner of Pro Fence Inc. Survivors include a son, Benjamin Spencer Cross, and a daughter, Nell P. Cross, both of Waynesboro. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shelby Hill Cemetery, Bristol. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 this evening at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, Bristol. Source: The Daily Progress, Sept. 20, 2002 George Benjamin "Ben" Cross, 61, of 9626 Old Turnpike Rd., Afton, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born July 8, 1941, in Bristol, Tenn., he was the son of Harry Kyle Cross and Gertrude Steppe Cross. He was the owner of Ben Cross Fencing and formerly the owner of Pro Fence, Inc. He attended Bristol Tennessee High School, East Tennessee State, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and the University of Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Army for two years in Weildeflicken, Germany. He supported the NRA, VFW, Republican Party, and the Hog Chapter. He was known by many for his great interest in cars and racing. He enjoyed racing and participated with the late model cars, sprint cars, and he drove a champ cart for two years. Recently Mr. Cross became the announcer for the late model cars at Natural Bridge Speedway. Mr. Cross was keenly interested in Civil War history and had visited most battlefields of this war. He was well versed in the history and events of this period and enjoyed sharing his knowledge. His humor and blue eyes will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He is survived by his son, Benjamin Spencer Cross; his daughter, Nell P. Cross, both of Waynesboro; and an aunt, Evelyn Phelps of Bristol, Tenn. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Shelby Hill Cemetery, Bristol, Tenn. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol, Tenn.
