NELSON COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - Gladys (Wade) Tomes Fitzgerald, 18 Mar 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Source: The Daily Progress, Saturday, March 20, 2004 Gladys Tomes Fitzgerald, 85, of Rice Ave., went to be with her Lord on Thursday morning March 18, 2004. She was a recent resident of Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born April 10, 1918, in Schuyler, Va., (Nelson County), the daughter of the late Robert W. Wade and Leslie Estelle Craig Wade. She was a life-long member of Basic United Methodist Church and for many years she had a beautician business in her home. Mrs. Fitzgerald was an avid bowler in the Waynesboro and Staunton Bowling leagues and she loved to play Bingo and cards. She was a faithful Atlanta Braves fan. She loved to play piano and she enjoyed the flowers she grew in her yard and home. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and her life was her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Grover William Tomes; her sister, Lucille Wade Currier; and two brothers, Joseph Wade and Spurgeon Wade. She is survived by her husband, Elwood I. Fitzgerald, who is retired from Crompton Shenandoah with 37 years of service; three daughters, Charlotte Tomes Hodge and her husband, John M. Hodge, of Lyndhurst, Sandra Tomes Evans of Gainesville, Ga., and Dianna Tomes Helmick and her husband, Will Helmick, of Staunton; a step-son, Randy R. Fitzgerald and his wife, Mona Fitzgerald, of Waynesboro; a step-daughter, Diane Rebecca Lucas of Waynesboro; her brother, Robert Wade of Schuyler; her sister, Virginia Wade Short of Vinton; six grandchildren Anthony and Mark Hodge, Brandan and Paul Whitmer, Kimberly Paige Coffey and Leslie Estelle Helmick; four step-grandchildren, Dallas and Eric Fitzgerald and Chris and Angela Lucas; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Funeral Service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, with the Rev. Loretta Benninghove and the Rev. Billy Coffey officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Mark Hodge, Anthony "Tony" Hodge, Paul Whitmer, Randy Fitzgerald, John Hodge, Lewis Whitmer, Will Helmick and Dean Coffey. Honorary pallbearers will be, Jess Bridge, Sonny Robinson, Maynard Patterson, Geraldine Quick, Glenn and Jean Miller, Eric Fitzgerald, Dallas Fitzgerald, Charles E. Fitzgerald, Brandan Whitmer, Kimberly Coffey, Leslie Helmick and Daniel Tomes Hodge. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2004, at the funeral home.
