Fitzgerald PORT REPUBLIC -- Joseph "Joe" H. Fitzgerald, 63, of Route 1, Port Republic, died on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 29, 1994) the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville. He was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Nelson County, a son of Arthur and Hannah Phillips Fitzgerald. He was a heavy equipment operator with Staunton Lime Co. and a member of the Grottoes Church of God. Mr. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by a stepson, Alvin Lee Spooner; three brothers, James C. Fitzgerald, Ralph W. Fitzgerald and Junior Franklin Fitzgerald; and by a grandson, Michael Stevens. Surviving are his widow, Sarah Helen Fitzgerald; two sons, Joe Fitzgerald Jr. of Waynesboro and Gary Fitzgerald of York, Pa.; six daughters, Joan Alexander and Ruby Cashion, both of Crimora. Joyce Brown of Verona, Mildred Blalock of Georgia, Barbara Stevens Shiflett of Waynesboro and Peggy Moore of Stuarts Draft, a stepson, William L. Spooner of Staunton; two stepdaughters, Helen Stroppel of Grottoes and Mary Doty of Florida; four brother, Wilmer Fitzgerald of Lynchburg, Eldridge Fitzgerald of Roseland. Elwood Fitzgerald of Waynesboro and Ed Fitzgerald of Lyndhurst; three sisters, Maggie Allen of Stuarts Draft, Jean Miller of Crimora and Frances G. Quick of Waynesboro; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephew. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Waynesboro chapel of Etter Funeral Home by the Revs. Alva Hurley and Charles C. Ramsey, with burial at Augusta Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Doug Fitzgerald, Jimmy Fitzgerald, Tony Fitzgerald. Scott Ryan, Chip Quick and Eddie Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be John Wright. Graddy Wright, Roger Losh and his grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Grottoes Fire Department and Rescue Squad 111.
