Obituary: Della Snead Fitzgerald, 2003 Source: Unknown Newspaper Contributor: Carol Harlow, charlow1@ntelos.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Della Snead Fitzgerald, 96, of Buena Vista, formerly of Amherst County, Virginia, passed away Friday, October 24, 2003 at her home. She was born on July 28, 1907 in Montebello, Va., the daughter of the late James C. Snead and Mary Elizabeth Fitzgerald Snead. Della was the oldest of seven children. She attended Fork Mountain School in Montebello where she was a repeated spelling bee champion. She taught school at Fork Mountain for several years. She was the oldest member of Midway Baptist Church in Amherst County, Va. She was a member of the Ladies Missionary Group and also worked with the Bible School and taught Sunday School. She always had an open door for pastors, educators, missionaries and anyone who needed a play to stay. Della was an avoid reader, flower and vegetable gardener, and traveler. She was also very passionate about her genealogy work and her family. Della was married to the late Robert Fulton Fitzgerald for 58 years. She was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Fitzgerald and brothers, Roy W. Snead, Harry R. Snead, Vernon R. Snead, James C. Snead, Jr. and her sisters, Eva G. Snead and Mary Lena Snead. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edgar and Mary Fitzgerald of Amherst County; a son and daughter-in-law, Edsel and Esther Fitzgerald of Chester, VA; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and James Bledsoe of Houston, Texas; a son and daughter- in-law, Calvert and Mary Fitzgerald of Buena Vista, Va; and a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Martha Fitzgerald of Buena Vista. She is also survived by a sister, Ruby Snead Akers of Frederick, MD and two sisters- in-law, Frenchie Snead of Covington, Va. and Paul Fitzgerald of Stuarts Draft, Va. and also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Della was blessed with 15 grandchildren; 30 great grand-children; and seven great great grandchildren. She has been surrounded in life with special friends and caregivers, Harry T. Johnson, Francis Harmon, Ruby Grow, Nancy Coleman, Phyllis Tomlin, Ann Ramsey, Edith Hatcher, Kathy Hostetter, and Lori Pelter. A special thank you to the Rockbridge Area Hospice. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2003 in the Midway Baptist Church with the Rev. Hugh Bumgardner and the Rev. W. David Bain officiating. Burial followed in the Amherst Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the memorial fund at Midway Baptist Church of the Rockbridge Area Hospice.
