  Mary Jane Burkes Fortune, 85, of Arrington, died peacefully Sunday night, 
June 8, 2003, at the Lovingston Health Care Center.
  Born August 30, 1917 in Nelson County she was a daughter of the late 
Alexander A. Burkes and Betty North Burkes. Besides her parents she was 
preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Warren Fortune on August 30, 1988 
and her brothers, Raymond and Massie Burkes.
  She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston.
  She is survived by her devoted son, W. Burkes Fortune and his wife, Jane, 
of Arrington; and her grandsons, Daniel "Danny" Fortune and his wife, Clara, 
of Arrington and Charles Fortune and his wife, Darci, of Allen, Texas.; two 
great-grandchildren, Amanda Nichole Fortune and Charles Matthew Fortune; and 
two nieces, Betty Lee Wood and Dean Bibb, both of Lovingston.
  A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Mountain 
Cove Cemetery near Lovingston with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating.
  The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home 
and suggest that memorials take the form of contributions to Calvary Baptist 
Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 264, Lovingston, Va. 22938 or Roseland Rescue 
Squad, P.O. Box 39, Roseland, Va. 22967.
