NELSON COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - Hans A.L. Gerstl, 19 Dec 2003 ----¤¤¤---- Source: The Daily Progress, Sunday, December 21, 2003 Hans A.L. Gerstl, 73, of Faber, (Nelson County), Va., departed this life on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at his home at Panorama Farms. Hans was born on March 8, 1930, in Neuhausen A.D.F. Germany, the son of the late Franz and Pauline Gerstl. He was a mechanical engineer, Realtor, entrepreneur, founder of the Schintzel House Restaurant and operator from 1970 through 1980. Hans immigrated from Canada to the U.S.A. in 1958 and became a U.S. citizen in 1963. In 1958, he accepted a job as a research assistant in Centrifuge enrichment of Uranium at the UVa Physics Lab. In addition to his wife of 52 years, Maria, he is survived by his son, Hans A.V. Gerstl; a daughter, Brenda Gerstl Becker and husband, Dave; two grandchildren, Lauren and Kelly Becker; two brothers, Franz Gerstl and his wife, Grita, with their children. Dr. Peter Gerstl and Martin Gerstl of Stuttgart, Germany; brother Dr. Sig. Gerstl and his wife, Andrea, and their children, Stephen Gerstl and Susi Gerstl Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Arthur of Stuttgart, Germany. Hans was a devoted grandfather, an avid flyer and a builder of many biplanes. He was a member of the Piedmont Region Antique Car Club and also has rebuilt several classic and antique cars. Family and close friends treasure the memory of his delightful sense of humor and his affectionate appreciation for others. A graveside memorial service will be held for family and friends on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Monticello Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service at Ludwigs Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.
