Giles Sr., 83, of Arrington, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at his residence. Born Dec. 2, 1918, in Lovingston, he was a son of the late Charles Lee Giles and Lader Loving Giles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Johns and Florence Bryant; and a brother, George Giles. He was a World War II Army Veteran and served with the Pacific Fleet. He was a former employee of Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville, of Central Virginia Electric Co-op, and of the Virginia Department of Highways and he was a retired employee of American Oil Co. He was an active member of Woodland Baptist Church for over 52 years, Sexton of the Woodland Memorial Cemetery and a member of Fleetwood Harmony Masonic Lodge No. 92 AF & AM for over 56 years. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bowling Giles; two sons, Jacky Giles Jr. and his wife, Pam, and their son, Jonathan, all of Arrington, and David Bowling Giles and his wife, Karry, and their son, Christian and their daughter, Chelsea, all of Amherst; two sisters, Mary G. Purvis of Lovingston and Thelma G. Hughes of Appomattox; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Woodland Baptist Church at Colleen with the Rev. David Blevins and the Rev. John Gordon officiating. Interment will be in Woodland Memorial Cemetery. Charlie's remains will lie in state from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening in the Sanctuary of his church. The family will also receive friends in the Social Hall of the church during that same time. Masonic Rites will be accorded to Charlie by his Masonic Brothers of Fleetwood Harmony Lodge at 7:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary, followed by the visitation. The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions in Charlie's honor and memory to Woodland Baptist Church, 4434 Thomas Nelson Hwy., Arrington, Va. 22922.
