Obituary: James M Houchens, 2002 Source: The Daily Progress, December 13, 2002 Contributor: Dennis Truslow -------------------------------------------------------------- James "Jim" Mason Houchens, 57, of Schuyler, (Nelson County), was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, from Martha Jefferson Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Dec. 9, 1945, in Charlottesville, he was the son of Hazel Lloyd Houchens Isabelle and the late Thurman A. Houchens. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Eugene Houchens; and a brother, Thurman A. Houchens Jr. He was a master brick layer and stone mason, and the owner of Houchens Stone Works, which he operated with a very special friend Raymond Morris. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and Legion of the Moose. In addition to his mother, Hazel Isabel, he is survived by his wife, Penny G. Houchens; two daughters, Sybil Sherleen Houchens of Batesville and her fiancée, Ken Roberts and Jamie Monique Nichols and her husband, Josh of Lake Monticello; two step sons, Daniel W. Lohr and his wife, Cindy of Gordonsville and Jonathan H. Lohr of Unionville; a step daughter, Tamara J. Doublestein and her husband, Lonnie of Lake Monticello; a grandchild, Annabelle Elaine Nichols; three step grandchildren, Miranda and Hayley Lohr and Devan M. Doublestein; a God son, Martin Short and his wife, Angela and children, Ishriel and Haven of Stanley; brothers, Roger L. Houchens and his wife, Mildred of Schuyler; Charles N. Houchens and his wife, Diane of Ruckersville; and numerous nephews, nieces and other friends and relatives. The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hill & Wood Chapel by Bishop Jonathan E. King and the Rev. Ronald Nickell. Interment will follow at Mooreland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Gregory Helm, Dr. Gordon Morris and nurses, Nancy Marshall and Becky Hand.
