Obituary: Gracie Virginia Hughes, 1988 Published: Unknown Newspaper Contributor: Dennis Truslow --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mrs. Gracie Virginia Hughes, 86, formerly of Wintergreen, died Sunday night (May 29, 1988) at Liberty House Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 24, 1901, in Nelson County, a daughter of Virgil and Betty Thompson Fitzgerald. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Wintergreen Christian Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Willie (Jeanette) Thompson, Mrs. Jack (Minnie) Truslow and Mrs. James (Elizabeth) Woodson, all of Wintergreen, and Mrs. Kenny (Gladys) Herring of Afton; three sons, William M. Hughes Jr. of Afton, Massie Hughes of Batesville and Bob Hughes of Wintergreen; one sister, Mrs. Owen (Hawsie) Truslow of Dooms; 32 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Hughes Sr., and four children, Pocohantas Newberry, Lewis M. Hughes, Sally D. Hughes and Vannie L. Hughes. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Waynesboro chapel of Etter Funeral Home by the Revs. Cecil Rhodes and John Chafee. Burial will be in Rockfish Valley Baptist Church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be William Truslow, Michael Fitzgerald, Gale Thompson, Mike Cook, Calvin Hughes and Jeff Hughes. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren.
