Hughes To Be Given Full Military Funeral Remains of Pvt. Herbert Higginbotham Hughes of Nellysford, will arrive at 3:40 p.m. today accompanied by military escort. Pvt. Hughes was originally interred in Italy where he lost his life on January 30, 1944. Deceased was born September 26, 1921 in Nelson County, son of the late Mr. Lewis F. Hughes and Mrs. Susie Higginbotham Hughes, who now resides in Nellysford. He was educated in Nelson county schools and was a merchant in Nellysford and also assisted his mother in the post office before entering service. Pvt. Hughes entered Service on May, 1943, and was sent to Camp Lee. He was later transferred to Fort McClelland, Ala and shipped overseas from Norfolk in September of the same year. Pvt. Hughes served with the replacement detachment Infantry of the US Army. He saw action in North Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct and several other medals. Survivors include his mother; three brothers, John F. and Nelson Hughes, both of Nellysford; and Charles of Farmville; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Duncan, Roseland; and Mrs. Susie Mawyer, Lovingston; and several nieces and nephews.
