Obituary: Bessie (Young) Blackstock Kanney, 2003 Source: The Daily Progress, July 9, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow, aquaair@erols.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bessie Young Blackstock Kanney, 92, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2003, at a local nursing home. She was born in Greenwood, Va., August 15, 1910, the daughter of Hannah Stuart Nicholson of Dundee, Scotland, and John Ed Young of Greenwood, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Ralph Blackstock, and her second husband, G. C. Kanney; her sister, Mary Young Farrar; and five brothers, Russell, Curtis, Bill, George, and Arthur Young. She is survived by her sister, Jane Young Rankin of Athens, Ga.; three nieces, Reba Farrar Woodward of Charlottesville, Connie Farrar Phillips of Forest, Va., and Betty Rankin Myrtle of Athens, Ga.; a number of nieces and nephews; and four stepchildren from her second marriage. She graduated as a RN from Pennsylvania Woman’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1934. She and her husband, Ralph Blackstock, owned and operated The Afton Store for twenty five years and she managed the Old Afton Hotel and Blue Ridge Terrace Inn at Afton, Va. Bessie was a nurse in Philadelphia and returned to nurse at the University of Virginia Hospital where she worked on South Five for over thirteen years. She was a longtime member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, Va. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Cemetery, Rt. 250, Greenwood, Va., with the Rev. Michael Pleasants officiating.
