NELSON COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - Clarence Raymond "Sharkey" Massie, 18 May 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Source: The Daily Progress, Thursday, May 20, 2004 Clarence Raymond "Sharkey" Massie, 77, of Scottsville, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at his home after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer. orn May 13, 1927, and raised in Nelson County, he was the son of the late James Clarence Massie and Betty Saunders Massie. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Page Tapscott Massie. He is survived by two daughters, Sallie Stuart Massie of Scottsville and Page Gannaway Massie and her husband, Glenn Nash, of Char-lotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, Sallie Elizabeth Nash of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Eva Massie Plummer and her husband, Al, of Richmond; numerous nieces, nephews and many, many friends. "Sharkey" led a colorful, full and interesting life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his return from Germany, he began his successful career in construction in Washington, D.C. and was involved in the building of such projects as Dulles Airport and various other government projects. In the early 1960's, he moved with his wife, Page, to Albemarle County, where he remained and raised his family. He was a partner in Massie & Boatwright General Construction. Although he had a successful busi-ness career, his success should be measured most by his generosity to mankind and the enrichment of those lives that he touched. "Sharkey" will be best remembered for his masterful storytelling, light-heartedness and enthusiasm for sharing a good joke. He was a great friend to young and old and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Prior to "Sharkey's" illness, he was involved in many local civic activities including the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Scottsville Masonic Lodge #45 A.F. & A.M., Charlottesville-Albemarle Board of Realtors, Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department and Tri-County Riding Club. The family wishes to express tremendous gratitude to Dr.'s Robert Pritchard, Gordon Morris, William Hammond and their entire staff for the great care and compassion they gave "Sharkey" during his illness. They also extend gracious thanks to the staff and volunteers of Hospice for all of the support and caring during his final days. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, with the Rev. Peter T. Way and the Rev. Dr. Michael S. Lee officiating. The family will re-ceive friends from 1 p.m. until time of the service. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Massie Family Cemetery at "Harewood" in Rose-land.
