Obituary: Clarence Massie Sr. Source: The Daily Progress, April 29, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clarence William Massie Sr., 65, was born in Afton, (Nelson County), Virginia on January 31, 1938, to the late Virginia Fisher-Massie and Clarence Reid Massie. He resided in Charlottesville, Va., for the last several decades and went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the UVa Medical Center. Mr. Massie was employed at Jokers Barber shop for over 30 years and loved the many customers and friends with whom he came in contact. He also was a devoted member of First Baptist Church and appreciated the wonderful ministers and members of the church and also others throughout the community whose prayers encouraged him to continue to fight the good fight. Mr. Massie leaves a host of family and friends who loved him and whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Massie; six children, Elizabeth Ayers, Ray Brock, Clarence Massie Jr., Maggie Brock-Barnes, Stella Massie and Henry Massie; two sons-in-law, Sherman Ayers and Darryl Barnes; two daughters-in-law, Antoinette Brock and Dionysia Johnson-Massie; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and four sisters, Shirley Smith, Clara White, Patricia Massie and Thelma Cabell. The family would like to give a very warm and special thank you to Mr. Massie's devoted sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Howard Smith of Nelson County; his beloved granddaughter, Ebony Barnes and dedicated niece, Hilda Massie, for the many wonderful ways they demonstrated their love, respect and care for Mr. Massie. We also thank the staff at the University of Virginia Medical Center for all of their love and support as well as the many members of the community who visited, called and prayed for Mr. Massie, our beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at First Baptist Church, 7th and Main Street, with the Rev. Dr. Bruce A. Beard officiating. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Viewing will be held from noon until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at First Baptist Church.
