Obituary: Earl Ray Matheny Jr. , died September 4, 2002 Source: The Daily Progress, September 5, 2002 Contributor: Charlie Truslow -------------------------------------------------------------------- Earl Ray Matheny Jr., 73, of Brookside Lane, Lovingston, (Nelson County) died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his residence after a brief illness. Born Dec. 23, 1928, in Waynesboro, he was a son of the late Earl R. Matheny Sr. and Virginia Gray Lenahan Matheny. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Ella Helmick Matheny, in 1998. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Highways with the Yancey Mill Division near Crozet. He is survived by three sons, Allen Ray Matheny of Lovingston, Alvin L. Lenahan of Afton, and Earl David Matheny of Charlottesville; four brothers, Robert, James, Ronnie, and Donnie Matheny, all of Afton; one sister, Joyce Bowles of Waynesboro; and three grandchildren, Cameron and Tyler Lenahan and Chloe Matheny. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the Wells/ Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday. The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 264. Lovingston, Va. 22949 or to Nelson Rescue Squad, Faber, Va. 22938.
