Obituary: Susie (Hughes) Mawyer, 2002 Source: News and Advance, July 20, 2002 Contributor: Dennis Truslow --------------------------------------------------------- FABER - Mrs. Susie Hughes Mawyer of 243 River Road, Faber, died July 18, 2002 at her home in Faber after valiantly battling cancer. She was born in Nelson County, Nov. 18, 1923, a daughter of the late Lewis Forrest and Susie Willis Higginbotham Hughes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel O. Mawyer on Jan. 31, 1977. Prior to his death, they ran the State Farm Insurance office in Lovingston from 1962 to 1977. Mrs. Mawyer was a member of Adial Baptist Church, Faber, where she was active as a Sunday School teacher, member of the WMU, of which she served as Secretary/ Treasurer, as well as financial secretary for the church for a number of years. She was a charter member of the Rockfish Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the 99th Infantry Division Association. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn Mawyer Tinder of Amherst, Ella Wood and her husband, Frank of Lovingston, Sandra Scourby and her husband, Alex of Alexandria; two sons, Samuel O. Mawyer II and his wife, Angie of Shipman, Jeffrey Forrest Mawyer and his wife, Kenda of Faber and the following grandchildren, Suzanne Painter, Jennifer Johnson, Karah Faison, Leslie Tinder, Stephanie Scourby, Peter Scourby, Madalyn Mawyer, Jeffrey Mawyer, Alyssa Mawyer and three great-grandsons, Justin and Aron Painter and Hunter Johnson. In addition, she is survived by the following in-laws, Mrs. Charles (Margaret) Hughes, Mrs. John (Frances) Hughes, Mrs. Nelson (Frances) Hughes, Mrs. Elizabeth Harvey and her husband, Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mawyer and Mrs. Louise Tyson. Mrs. Mawyer was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Duncan and seven brothers, Dotie, Tom, Jeter, John, Cubby, Charles and Nelson Hughes. Susie will be remembered for her love of God and family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Family night will be held from 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2002 at the Adial Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Bond and the Rev. Evan Johnson officiating with burial immediately following in the church cemetery.
